I like the future question and the one about ancestors! The ancestor one being my favorite. There is so much I don’t know about my family history and I want to know more! I think it’s crazy how little I even know about my grandparents. I want to know my grandmas and mom at 25! So I guess instead of my ancestors homeland I would want to write my ancestors or even more I wish my ancestors would have written to me…which is why I think it would be cool to write letters to the future!
I wish you guys the best of luck with your traveling projects…may they one day be carted around on a ship in train cargo boxes to be displayed all over the world! That was still the coolest art show I’ve ever seen and we didn’t even “get in”
I personally love the idea of writting a letter to the future..future family members to be exact. I agree with Tiffany, I wish I knew more about my grandparents when they were our age, & what an average day was like for them.
What about a question of how the person has been blessed? I’m kinda thinking like “paying it forward” I think it would be an awesome thing to keep track of what people have done. Just a thought, I think these are solid questions!
Hey Jake and Carrie,
I really like this project, and I hope that you discover and then tell peoples’ stories during your travels.
Have you guys considered doing work in Native American reservations at all? Judging by your route, you’ll be close to some out West and into Alaska. Also, you should look into working in after school programs with your photography and writing project. Kids would love it! (But you should make sure that your criminal background and child abuse clearance things are up-to-date.)
We will be praying for you both!
I think the Dear America project has so much promise! It has the potential to be inspiring, relevant, and truth bearing. As world citizens, it’s important to be aware of our own habitat and how we affect our neighbors both nationally and internationally. I think it would be a great step in a movement towards tolerance and understanding.
Love to you both. We’ll be right next to you the whole time.
Jake & Carrie, I like the ideas mentioned above, but also like the idea of writing a short note to the next person on the project. I think that could help to build continuity from person-to-person and community-to-community. I’m excited to see what comes of this!
Chris
I think it would be interesting in the Dear America project to specifically seek out people who live in America but don’t necessarily come from America. Not only is immigration a hot button issue, but it’s also really interesting to think about how someone could have asked our ancestors a similar question and they would have a whole different answer than ourselves because they weren’t from America either!
It would be great to read these letters to America from legal/illegal immigrants in contrast with a WASP from CA, a gay teenager from IL, etc. I think we’d find a major undertone of a need for acceptance and to be understood. As Oprah says (yes I’m quoting her!)– everyone just wants to be heard.
Just a thought!
Thanks for all the feedback guys! Lots of good ideas!
Tiff/Kim – Dear Descendant! This one has had the most interest so far! Maybe we can trial run it at our next circle weekend?
Bethany – we especially hope to involve the Native American community – we’re not sure the best way to do this – we might go to the Gathering of Nations in April or go visit some reservations or just hope we meet some folks along the way:) If anyone has any connections let us know!
Chris – I also really like the community feel to the Dear Next Person idea – like a secret one time penpal:) we could photograph the person who sends the note each time then put it all together in a book/web slideshow at the end and people can find out who sent them the note…that could work?
Kate – i love all your perspectives on Dear America – you have been the strongest fan of this one so far and it is my first love – so I appreciate your fervor:) I think it will be one of the options!
Everyone – thanks all for your input! it really helps more than you know. feel free to give feedback throughout the journey – it makes us feel like we’re not doing this alone:)
Very Proud! Thanks for including me on your idea! You are more than welcome to stay with me out in L.A. if you guys venture out this way
I LOVE this idea…it reminds me of my adventure this summer. Spending 6 weeks couch surfing and each time not planning where I was going and who I was staying with. Totally out of my comfort zone, but so worth the experience of living life and soaking in moments that you otherwise would never have. I like the dear ancestors idea….also reflect on things you would have done differently. i KNOW it’s hard to think about that now…but once you journey, you’ll see what I mean. Looking forward to hearing more!! God speed!!
